Preply or Superprof vs an Independent Portuguese Teacher
Preply, Superprof, italki, Verbling, Classgap and AmazingTalker can help learners browse many Portuguese tutors, but a marketplace profile does not by itself guarantee the qualifications, preparation or continuity you need. A qualified independent teacher can work directly with you, prepare lessons around your goals and maintain one learning plan over time. Compare credentials, lesson preparation, feedback, continuity, total cost and platform convenience before choosing.

What a tutor marketplace provides
A tutor marketplace brings many teacher profiles, search filters, calendars, messaging, reviews and payment tools into one website or app. That can make it convenient to compare availability, lesson prices and teaching styles. Some platforms also offer video classrooms, support or credential indicators.
The platform is an intermediary, however, not the lesson itself. Its screening rules, labels and payment model differ from one service to another. A profile can help you make a shortlist, but you still need to establish who will teach you, what their qualifications mean and how they will support your progress. Qualified teachers work on marketplaces, and an independent teacher is not automatically qualified.
Simple comparison: marketplace or direct teacher?
Five stars means that route offers more of the named feature. It is not an overall quality score. The table compares the usual marketplace model with working directly with one independent teacher; individual platforms and teachers vary.
Swipe the table sideways to compare both options.
| What you are comparing | Tutor marketplace | Working directly with one independent teacher |
|---|---|---|
| Find many teachers quickly | 5/5 Many searchable profiles in one place. | 1/5 You are assessing one teacher rather than browsing a marketplace. |
| Built-in booking, payment and platform support | 5/5 These tools are a main marketplace benefit. | 2/5 The teacher arranges their own systems, which vary. |
| No marketplace fee layer between learner and teacher | 1/5 The platform may deduct teacher charges, charge the learner, or both. | 5/5 No marketplace deduction; normal business and payment costs may still apply. |
| Direct control of terms and communication | 3/5 You communicate with the teacher within platform rules and systems. | 5/5 You and the teacher agree the service and communication directly. |
| Qualifications, preparation, personal plan and continuity | Teacher-dependent - not star-rated Check the individual teacher and what they promise. | Teacher-dependent - not star-rated Independence alone does not guarantee any of these. |
The key cost fact is that a marketplace needs revenue to provide its tools, promotion and support. Working directly removes that marketplace fee layer, so more of the lesson payment can remain with the teacher. It does not prove that every direct lesson has a lower advertised price, or that every independent teacher offers better teaching. Compare the final cost and what it includes.
What the platforms say
Preply
Preply’s tutor page explains its profile, scheduling, rate-setting and platform-charge model, and says that a particular certification or previous teaching experience is not required to apply. Its separate tutor evaluation guidance describes education-certificate checks and credential indicators. Those indicators can be useful, but read the credential itself and ask how it relates to teaching Portuguese.
Superprof
Superprof offers searchable listings and contact tools across many subjects. The Superprof Australia terms say the service attempts to verify information but cannot guarantee the accuracy of listing details or tutors’ qualifications. The terms also describe access and payment arrangements. Confirm credentials directly and understand the current terms before committing.
italki
italki’s current app listing describes language-teacher profiles, booking and individual online lessons. Because accessible official documentation about its current teacher categories could not be confirmed for this review, this comparison makes no claim about a category guaranteeing a particular qualification. Check each teacher’s stated education, experience and lesson process.
Verbling
Verbling is focused on online language teaching. Its teacher requirements state that applicants need previous teaching experience and a strong command of the language, while teaching certificates are strongly preferred. Screening is helpful, but it does not replace checking whether a teacher’s experience, Portuguese variety and approach match your needs.
Classgap
Classgap combines tutor search with scheduling, messaging and a virtual classroom. Its online tutor page explains the teacher profile, rate-setting and platform model. Ask what happens outside live class time: who supplies materials, how feedback is recorded and whether one plan carries across your bookings.
AmazingTalker
AmazingTalker offers matching, teacher profiles and individual online lessons. Its Portuguese teacher application page describes teaching-experience or certification expectations, preparation of teaching materials and platform charges. A learner should still examine the specific teacher’s evidence, teaching method and commitment to a continuing plan.
Fluency and teaching qualifications are different
Speaking Portuguese fluently is valuable, but speaking a language and teaching it are different abilities. A qualified language teacher has studied how to explain patterns, diagnose errors, sequence material, adapt a task and give feedback that a learner can use. A native speaker may be an excellent teacher, and a non-native speaker may also be highly qualified; neither result follows from fluency alone.
Look for a named degree, teaching certificate or other relevant education, then verify the institution and subject. Ask how that training appears in real lessons. Marketplace approval may provide one piece of evidence, while independence provides none by itself. The same standards should apply to every teacher.
Preparation, feedback and continuity
A useful lesson is more than a video call. Before class, the teacher can select or create work for your level and immediate goal. During class, they can balance conversation, pronunciation, listening, grammar and vocabulary instead of following an unrelated sequence. Afterwards, clear notes or practice can turn corrections into the next learning step.
Continuity matters because recurring errors and goals become visible over time. Ask whether the teacher keeps a learning plan, records what was covered and uses that record to prepare the next session. A platform can store bookings and messages, but the individual teacher determines whether those tools become a coherent learning process.
Fees, access charges and total cost
Marketplaces need revenue to provide technology, marketing, support and payment handling. Depending on the service, the platform may charge the learner, deduct fees from teacher earnings, or use a combination. These arrangements can affect what the teacher receives and how lessons are priced, but they do not prove that a marketplace teacher provides poor teaching.
Compare the complete, current cost and what it includes: live time, preparation, materials, written feedback, cancellation conditions, payment protection and any access charge. Platform terms change, so use the linked official pages rather than relying on an old percentage. In Australia, the ACCC guidance on advertising claims is also a useful reminder to assess the overall impression and evidence behind comparisons.
When a marketplace may be useful
A marketplace may suit you when you want to browse a wide range of schedules or prices quickly, need an integrated booking and payment system, want a short conversation session, or are still exploring which Portuguese variety and teaching style fit you. It can also help you discover a qualified teacher you would not otherwise find. Convenience is a genuine benefit when it matches your priorities.
Benefits of working directly with a qualified independent teacher
Direct work can make the relationship simpler: you know who is responsible for the plan, materials, feedback and communication. A qualified independent teacher can learn your history, prepare around your purpose and keep one sequence across lessons without your learning being organised around a marketplace profile.
It may also make the service and total price easier to discuss directly. Those are possibilities, not guarantees. Independence must be supported by verifiable qualifications, a clear method, transparent terms and credible student evidence. The strongest comparison is between actual teachers and actual lesson offers, not between labels.
Seven questions to ask any Portuguese teacher
- What relevant degree, teaching certificate or training can I verify?
- Do you teach Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese or both?
- How will you assess my current level and define my goal?
- What do you prepare before each lesson, and are materials included?
- How will you correct me and track recurring needs?
- Will one learning plan continue across lessons, and what happens if the teacher changes?
- What is the complete current cost, including platform or access charges and cancellation terms?
