Native knowledge and teaching skill are different

Growing up with a language provides extensive experience of its sounds, expressions and cultural context. Teaching requires another set of skills: selecting material for a learner’s level, explaining unfamiliar patterns, listening diagnostically, planning practice and helping a student reuse corrections.

That means “native speaker” and “qualified teacher” are not opposite categories. A person may be both, either or neither. The useful question is what evidence the individual can provide for the teaching you need.

Compare five things

1. Language variety: Does the teacher focus on Brazilian or European Portuguese, and does that match your reason for learning?
2. Teaching background: Are qualifications and relevant experience stated clearly?
3. Explanation: Can the teacher make a difficult sound or pattern understandable without replacing practice with a lecture?
4. Feedback: Will corrections be specific, manageable and reused in later speaking?
5. Goal fit: Has the teacher worked with learners preparing for your kind of conversation, travel or professional use?

A non-native teacher may understand the learning process from personal experience. A native teacher may offer immediate access to natural usage and cultural nuance. Neither advantage removes the need for preparation and fit.
